My WiP painting and modeling post

Sounds awesome.

When/if I pick up a 3d printer, I’ll be printing some of this off for sure.

Sounds good, just working on some of the damaged portions of the walls, personally i would imagine these type of building mostly just mud/dung bricks under the stuccoed walls, but could anyone else see them using a corrugated metal substructure instead, another words would people like to see both options or just the brick based ones

brick substructure

metal substructure

personally i prefer the brick based one as that seems mostly likely to have been used as there is always dirt around, but i also don’t mind the look of the corrugated version so i would like peoples input on what seems better tho i could alway do alternates of each version if there is enough demand for both

I agree, the brick works much better for this, and that’s kind of how I always pictured them too. I’d just be interested in the brick variant.

yhea in reality they tend to be brick based from what i have seen but i am sure there are others that break the rule

I’m fond of saying “There are exceptions to every rule” but exceptions are just that, exceptions to the norm.

Wow! I know with all of my heart 3D printing is the future of this hobby, but I didnt realize home models had that resolution! I’ve been waiting for them to be as good as a rough scratchbuild.

yhea steiney they are good for creating the rough basis to work from with these i intend to use a textured paint to give them the desired look of rendered plaster walls similar to stucco or adobe structures, in regards to detail it can be more detailed if you willing to wait for it for example the corner segments i print at 0.2mm layer height and that takes around one and half hours, but if i wanted more detailing you can lower that even more to say 0.1mm layer height and it would take nearly 3 hours for the same thing. there are alternate printers in the SLA bracket that print in resin that can achieve almost production level minis but i cannot speak for experience with these.

In other words, go out to eat in the evening, come back and start the next piece. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think for something like those adobe buildings, the lower resolution might actually be better as it will leave a bit of extra texture?

oh yhea you can certainly make use of the natural texture of it in your designs i made a wand from harry potter for my nephew and used the layering to look like the grain of the wood

A small update today mostly a few tests towards my terrain

first up testing paint and colour styles for my vault city terrain,

the first of all the whole thing is covered in a textured paint spread on with an old bank card to keep it fairly even and relatively smooth, the bottom part was given a heavy layer of brown wash, where as the top portion was left without the wash, then from the left side i used an off white drybrush, then slightly drybrushed with a of white green color, the right side was dry brushed with off white, then an orange ochre to give it a more red earth hue sort of like certain portions of the Mojave and around the middle is a blend of the two, the same processes where done to the washed areas at the bottom personally i prefer the top left hand side for the moment, but i do have some more materials arriving tomorrow to experiment with before i settle on doing several buildings worth in a style.

now some previews of the damaged segments of the vault city walls these are essentially the same with the exception of the exposed substructure

Large Brick(my personal favorite)

Small brick

small corrugated metal

Larger Corrugated metal

Steel plates(my second favorite

there are several patterns of damage done for the plain walls with each variants using those 5 substructures

Love it! Going to be printing off a couple of those myself.

i would recommend when resizing it go for a width of 85mm total as its just about the right size to be in scale with the humans, and then you can make the shell of the box 20mm cubed and tuck the tabs in while sticking it down i cheated and used super glue as i was to lazy to fetch my pva lol

I’ll keep the size in mind, your size looks good and I figured I was going to need a little trial and error to get it right. I’m guessing I can get 3-4 of them onto a sheet of paper, so if that’t the case, I’ll just print one set on card stock, keep a couple for me, then give the rest to the friend who is interested in the game.

yhea a4 sized if you moved them around you might be able to get about 10 out of it for that scaling i measured up the codsworth model to see if he could fit that sort of scale if he was folded up like a deactivated mr handy folds up in game and it seems about right

Sounds awesome. I really cant picture needing/wanting more than 3-4 of them at the very most, but if I’m dragging out the card stock to print it, I’ll see what I can fit. I’ll make the ones I want, send a couple to my friend who’s getting into the game, then the rest can be put in a drawer for some day in the future, . . . besides, my kids have taken quite an interest in the game, so might make sense to just let them have whatever’s left as well.

could alway make it into a thing and get them involved in making a couple boxes together

They’re six, not sure how well they’ll do boxes. That said, I plan to give them the non-uniques as well as the Mutant Hounds from an extra starter box of this game and try to teach them how to paint miniatures with those (Not that I’m very good, but I can teach them the basics at least.) We’ll see how they do with that before I commit myself to letting them play with the glue. :stuck_out_tongue:

haha fair enough

The Mr Handy box looks amazing, Gonna make a few for myself, too. I need to get me some Mr Handy fuel thingys, too. :eyes: @Modiphius
