Having worked around large dumpsters in the past, and keeping in mind the height on the figure’s base, I think they hit the height really well. In my experience, the front side of a dumpster typically comes up to my navel and the high end to my shoulder, and I’m a fairly average height. Looks to me like it’s about the same with the model.
I just went over the terrain pieces I received, and other than a small bubble near the base of one of my filing cabinets and another bubble on one of the suitcases, I really couldn’t find anything wrong with anything. The issue with the filing cabinet should be really easy to hide, and as far as I’m concerned, the hole in the suitcase is just where a mouse chewed it’s way in.
The only complaints I would have are:
The ammo crates are in bundles of three. Would have preferred individual ones (Modiphius, if you’re reading this, do individual ammo crates at some point, Put them five in a terrain pack, individual ammo boxes give us a lot more freedom in how we display them. For example, a single one could go on a miniature base while a cluster of three like what you just released would make things, . . . . cluttered.)
All of the pieces have a flat side on the bottom where there;s no detail work. So tipping crates or lockers on their sides is going to expose that surface. Probably not a big deal to most people, and the same can be said for the other terrain items they’ve released so far.
Other than those things, I couldn’t find anything wrong with anything. I thought the detail work on everything looked clean and well defined.
I think the question was more about the height of the rubbish/trash bins than the dumpster. Looking at them lying down next to the dumpsters in your original pic it seems like they are about as tall as the tall side of the dumpsters, which would indeed put them at around shoulder height for a mini… is that right?
Thanks, so that would make them around chin height, once the base is taken into account?
That does seem a little large compared to the computer games, especially for a game that has been so good with scale to date. But I suppose it’s (just) within the bounds of the size you’d expect a real world freestanding rubbish bin like that to be.
I can’t recall if that is in scale with the same rubbish bin on the junk barricades or not?
One of the first things I did was place items up against the junk barricades. The size seems to be exactly the same on everything they’ve incorporated into the barricade. Rubbish bin, Nuka Cola machine, Ice machine, etc.
That’s really helpful, thankyou I had meant the bins rather than dumpsters as gribble guessed, but I hadn’t realised they were so large in the game, and it’s good to know the match across terrain pieces!
Got a little something new to share with all of you today.
Still having trouble with the camera not focusing, it doesn’t have an auto-focus like my last one. That said, this will hopefully give at least some idea of what I put together last night. (Seems like every picture I take with the thing is worse than the last. It’s tremendously frustrating.)
@robhistory was kind enough to share a few Zombicide miniatures with me a while back, among them was a hotdog mascot that I instantly thought would make a great Glowing One. The next thing I thought was that I should pair it up with a hotdog stand. So that’s exactly what I did.
I was happy with the color combination I came up with for the skin. I used a Kiwi undercoat and a home made Forest Green wash over that.
Awesome job, the coloring on the hot dog looks spot on. Where did you find the cart if I may ask? It would make a great searchable even without hotdog-ghoul.
The hotdog cart I found on ebay. O Gauge model railroad. And I paid more for it than I care to admit.
I’ve been looking at the card, and it’s hollow underneath. I THINK I can fit a small green LED and a battery underneath. I’m debating with myself if I should do that, then put a couple of small green mushrooms around the edge to make it look like it’s glowing shrooms.
Looks like I missed the bit about coloring when I posted earlier (I thought I’d said something, but I was clearly wrong.)
The bun is just about perfect. The colors worked better than I dreamed possible. I used “Light Mocha” from the Apple Barrel brand (I tend to use cheap brands for larger areas, and have started using the “good” paints for the detail work) then hit that with a “Flesh Wash” from the Army Painter paint line. The colors turned out fantastic.
For the hotdog itself, I used “Ripe Tomato” paint by Apple Barrel and followed up with that same “Flesh Wash” from the Army Painter line. It was a little redder than I was shooting for, but but I still felt it turned out well within the realm of what I was hoping for.
The skin is something the pictures aren’t showing well. But that’s where I’m happiest. I started with “Kiki” green by Apple Barrel again, (This is almost a perfect match for “Poisonous Cloud” by Army Painter) Then used a dark green home made wash. The name is “Forest Green” for the color I used, Apple Barrel paint again. However the color has been discontinued. “Angel Green” by Army Painter is probably the closest match I have to it for a color overall.
When I use washes, I tend to keep a dry brush on hand. I give the model a couple of minutes to sit after I’ve slathered a good amount of wash onto it (You do it enough, it becomes pretty intuitive how much wash you need. You don’t typically waste a lot.) After a few minutes, I come back with the dry brush and use it sort of like a wick to pull away the excess. For this particular model, it was the mouth and eyes that seemed to be where the wash wanted to settle most. I find that by giving the model a couple of minutes to sit, you sort of stain the paints a little, so even if you pull a little more off than you intended it’s not as noticeable.(Again, not something you do often once you get used to working with washes.
Since the pictures above, were done, I painted the base gray, took the natural seam and scored it deeper like it’s a seam in the concrete, and I have a couple of little mushrooms painted up a nice bright green I hope to add to the base.
I’m going to see if I can con my wife into taking a couple of pictures once we tuck the minions into bed. If I pull it off, I should have some better images in a little bit.
Alright, got some new pictures. They’re not as good as my old camera took, but they’re better than the ones I’ve been taking the last few days. It might take a month or two before I can afford a new camera, but these should give you a much better idea of what I’ve been working on in the meantime.
First up, some new pictures of the crops I’ve been doing.
Second, painted Vertibird. It needs a bit of dirtying up, but is otherwise done for now. I tried to pattern it after the ones in game for the color pattern.
And finally the Hotdog cart and Glowing One. Still not a great picture, but should be able to give a better idea of what the colors actually look like.
The plants are from a couple of different sources.
The Grapes: I got those probably about ten years ago from the Halloween decorations at my local Menards store. It was intended to go with all the little “Haunted House” village stuff.
The cabbages/lettuce: Those are something that the gentleman I’ve been playing brought me. They’re little white and green plastic flowers that he’d found cheap a long time ago. You can likely find similar at your local crafts and hobby store (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Jo Anne’s Fabrics, or similar stores.)
I’ve also got some pumpkins, watermelons, and tomatoes from some model railroad stuff that’s not pictured.
He did turn out awesome. And even though the hot dog part looks a bit too red, it feels more realistic that way… he got stuck with the cheap costume.
I have a feeling I’m going to be spending a good bit of money on Ebay and the local train shop in the near future.
If you have a Menards store near you, they actually do a lot of military themed model train stuff, and some really amazing buildings. If you have a model railroad store near you, they’re usually pretty good too.
Yeah, the cheap costumes do tend to have those darker reds. I was actually explaining it away by figuring that either 200 years either caused the color to darken a bit, or that the “Glowing” one sort of baked the costume from the inside a bit.
Since the picture above, I added a little green mushroom to his base, but haven’t done anything more with the model. I also wanted to slip his base into one of those recessed bases, but it doesn’t fir, so still trying to figure out, what if anything, I want to do with the base beyond setting it up like a sidewalk segment.
