Finished a terminal!

I’m hoping to cast the other one from the set, so I can make some spares to rough up and scatter around terrain as broken computers. I’ll post here if it works!

Thanks! Only issue I can see is that it seems to be a bit out of scale with some of the figures (though so does the other terrain set I got, so maybe all of them are on a slightly different scale), otherwise I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out :slight_smile:

Did you paint the screen, or print and glue?

That’s exactly what I would do. Either using that blue thermoplastic stuff, or make a silicone mold. On that point, I’m jealous. I cant get any resin terrain pieces anywhere. If anyone has any spares they are willing to sell, or know of anyone who has the sets in stock please message me. I’m looking for terminals and nuka cola machines in particular.

Thankyou! The screen is painted, first the text and then a green wash to give a slight green hue to the edge of the monitor (deliberately not too bright, though slightly greener than it seems to have come out in the pictures) :slight_smile:

I’ve tried silicone putty and liquid silicone in the past, but found the blue thermoplastic to be my favourite personally (mostly because of it’s ease and re-usability). I’ve already made a few casts of some of the weapons and armour from the other miniatures, hoping I should be able to do a few conversions on later models or use them in scenery :slight_smile:

What do you cast it with? Some kind of putty? Can you pour into them?

@Alaiteir: That’s an amazing job on the terminal screen! The little “blips” on the screen look convincing at a distance as nice, orderly, low-brightness lettering on an old-style CRT screen. I tried putting a few lines on the screen for my CRTs, but they didn’t come out nearly as plausible as actual screen content. Kudos! :smiley:

I’ve got an acrylic resin I use for moulds I can pour into, otherwise I use a mix of greenstuff and milliput :slight_smile:

Thankyou! Realism is always a big goal for whenever I’m trying to paint things, so I’m always glad to hear when it’s worked :slight_smile: Thinning the paint slightly and having a nice thin brush are key to small details I’ve found

So these aren’t strictly Fallout related, but I haven’t had the time to finish anything since the terminal and I thought some people might find these interesting. A few years ago I wanted a model of Gandalf, but couldn’t afford the one GW were selling, so I had a go at sculpting him myself (after practising by sculpting a Whiterun Guard):

They’re some of my earliest attempts at sculpting my own minis, but I’m still quite proud of them. They’re 25mm scale, so look noticeably small compared to the F:WW ones. I’m hoping to use the same skills to (eventually) try and sculpt some of the characters that I don’t think are likely to get official mini’s any time soon/at all (ie, when Valentine comes out I want to be able to have a model of Ellie Perkins as well).

I managed to find a picture of Gandalf before he was painted as well, in case anyone’s curious :slight_smile:

Update on my terrain project, trialling floor styles:


They’re not glued together yet, but the last image shows a dry fit of roughly where they’ll fit into the building. For my first building I did a simple wooden floorboard, but for this one I wanted to try and copy the floor style seen on buildings like this one:

It seems to be carpet over two layers of wooden boards, with metal beams running between them. My plan is that each terrain project is designed to develop different scratch building skills/styles and test different ideas, so I can eventually look to building a proper gaming table (in the distant future when I have space for one anyway). :slight_smile:

I also had a chance to play a few AI matches the other week, including the Escort the Brahmin mission from the campaign handbook. Alas I had no brahmin for the mission, but the Emperor’s most glorious Imperial Navy was kind enough to loan the survivors a battleship as a stand in:

The main thing I’m trying to decide at the moment is what kind of interior decoration to put in it. I’m thinking of maybe doing it as a residential building (ie, each floor would be a flat/apartment), possibly sculpting a few beds/sofas to put on them.

I’m also trying to plan it in terms of how it’ll affect gaming. The size of the table I have to game on is a bit limiting, so matches quickly tend to descend into mêlée, but I’m hoping I can design the building such that it’ll give more opportunities for ranged combat. If I alternate which side of each level had a platform to get to the next one, then miniatures at the bottom would have to move in a vertical ‘S’ shape to get to a mini at the top, increasing the distance they have to cover (and thus the time a mini at the top has available to shoot at them) without requiring a wider tabletop. If that makes sense at all anyway?

Those floors really match the game’s style, looking good :smile:

It think that will work well for breaking up the table and encouraging shooting. If you add cover using scatter pieces it should mean that there is still a way for melee characters to get stuck in without just being shot apart but make it more balanced. IMO anyway!

Yeah I’ve got a couple of wooden barricades that I’m planning to make more of (at some point hoping to save up and get the corvega or nuka-cola machines set as well), otherwise there’s the risk of switching the bias too far towards shooting. Trying to find that nice middle ground is the challenge :slight_smile:

@Alaiteir: If you end up switching the bias too far towards shooting, then I suppose you can just add more COMPLETE cover pieces to break up open “kill zone” areas that the close-combat specialists might need to traverse in order to close with the enemy?

Yeah, I think this is the key …creating vertical and horizontal corridors of cover and forcing movement through them, mixed with open ‘no mans land’ kill zones.

Love the detail of the flooring. I like that.

Yeah exactly :slight_smile: I’m considering doing a row of hollow buildings that are solely for the purpose of blocking lines of sight and creating streets (the interiors are what take up most of the time, so in theory it’d be a way to get a tabletop covered with terrain relatively quickly). I do like the idea of everything being fully explorable though, so I’m not sure

Once I’ve gotten more practice at making terrain (and perhaps bought some tools more complicated than just a sharp knife) I’m hoping to make some large skyscraper style interiors, as they’ll have lots of corridors and funnels with some more open reception like areas. Definitely something for the future though!

Have you thought of making it so you can have planks on the outside of all windows and doors (maybe via magnets) so that you can make them either explore-able or not depending on whims at the time
