GateKeeper's Models and Terrain

@robhistory
Took me a few minutes. I got the boat from eBob.

http://www.ebobminiatures.com/fantasy.html

There’s a few things over there with some potential, but given that the boat is a little small, I’d be concerned about the old truck or some of the other larger pieces they do even though they look excellent for this.

Spent the last week or so priming every single Fallout model I own. I thought my Vault Dwellers wouldn’t arrive for a while because of the lockdown (And the fact that they were a couple of weeks later than I had expected already.) but they actually arrived today! I’ll see about getting those built and share a picture or two of them on the next day or so! Also got a couple of other goodies to show off when I start snapping pictures again.

With nearly all of my minutes primed, I’m running out of excuses to not paint, . . . .

Guess what I did today? Built some models!

This is one set of Unlikely Allies, two sets of T-51, and three sets of Vault Dwellers. I did head swaps with one set of the T-51’s in the interest of some visual variety and to give myself some helmets to use with scatter pieces. The images also include a four pack of tow trucks (Was only a couple bucks more to get a four pack than it would have been to buy two of them individually. I’m pretty sure @robhistory will give the other two a good home), I’m leaning toward keeping the green and blue ones. Then there’s the ice cream truck, when I saw it, I knew I had to put it on my table.

If anyone is interested in looking up the vehicles, you can find them here:

Tow trucks:

Ice Cream Truck:

The vehicles are 1/38 scale, so they’re a little bigger than the 1/43 scale I prefer, but they still look really good.

Looking forward to seeing your stuff painted, you seem to have quite the collection!

May I ask your thoughts on the vault dwellers? I like the idea of trying to build a vault themed force in the future, so I’m curious to hear what you think of them

The vehicles do look a little large up close, but seem to be fine at tabletop distance

I haven’t actually played the Vault Dwellers yet, so I can’t speak for how they play. As for building the models, they were pretty easy. Two of them were a single piece model, so all I had to do is mount them on the base they came with. The other two were two piece models which made them simple to build as well.

Of anything it was the T-51 with the sword that was hardest to build. None of the power armor models had pins on their feet with a corresponding hole to make mounting easier. With only one foot in contact with the base and the slight forward lean to the model, it was a pain to get it to stay put.

I primed up the models last night. Now I need to motivate myself to actually start painting.

Ah cool, that’s good to hear about the Vault Dweller minis  And I’ll have to bear that in mind when I get around to my T-51 set!

Yeah, with the T-51’s, a little piece of wire to pin them would be best, especially with the one model. The feet are big enough to create a good contact point, but if they ever get knocked around at all, I won’t be surprised if they get knocked free of their bases.

I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a 3d printer. The printer and resin arrived today, and I’m still waiting on a couple more things before I get started. I’m reading the guide that came with it tonight, and I’ve got a ton of items I downloaded off of thingiverse and similar sites that I am hoping to print.

All of that said, anyone who’s done some 3d printing in the past got any advice? Thoughts? Comments? Things you’d like to see printed?

I’m leaning toward starting with some items from the scatter set for sale from Modiphius (I REALLY want some of the shelving.) Then move on to possibly a big project like the diner that I found a file for.

Also, I’m looking for some smaller scatter items, but I haven’t been able to find many. I’ve been hoping to find something that will let me print a Fat Man, Minigun, various chems, or a host of other smaller items. Unfortunately, what I’ve been able to find so far has been limited to a couple of items like med boxes, lunch pails, and those kinds of things.

What printer did you buy? There’s a plethora of printers out there and it took me forever to settle on a small selection.

As far as I can tell resin printers are easier to use compared to FDM printers, because there are fewer variables you have to considers and thus less things that can go wrong. The process of printing is very straightforward. It will take longer to setup though and I think resin requires some manual post-processing. Resin printers also have higher maintenance costs long term (the screen won’t last forever for example).

Still, any printer will probably save you a lot of money.

If you have a MSLA resin printer (instead of a SLA printer) you will even have extremely fast printing speeds.

Downsides are the limitation of materials you can use. You’re stuck with resin, which is great for miniatures, but less so for other purposes. But that shouldn’t be an issues for you I believe. You will also have to be careful when handling the resin, which can be risky as it is a liquid. The liquid resin can cause serious allergic(?) reactions.

Anyway, that’s just what I learned by researching. I still haven’t had the chance to get a printer myself - so please correct me if I’m mistaken.

Happy printing!

This is what I got:

It was the highest rated unit in my price range. I keep telling myself that I bought it for more than miniatures, . . . . but the only files I’ve bothered to look up are miniatures, . . . . .

I’m planning to spend a couple of days digging around the internet for guides for the machine. The alcohol I need for cleaning arrives on the 20th, so that’s when I’ll probably start using the thing.

I found a sign for the diner in the game, it’s a fairly simple print, and I’m going to make two of them, one for a proper diner sign and one I’m going to use to do a swap with one of my Behemoths (Going to swap out the club, I have something special planned for the one.). By my logic, it’s going to be simple print that if I somehow screw it up, I can likely still use it by passing off any imperfections as damage. Thus it will likely make a good first print.

One of the things I’m trying to figure out is how to do more than one item at a time when printing. I’ve heard that you can do multiple of small items, but I’m still trying to figure out how it would be done.

Ah, interesting! I was just looking into the specs of that printer, because it has so many good reviews.

Looking on Amazon there’s also a water-washable resin for the Elegoo Mars, so you don’t have the use isopropanol. I think I will get this, because the number of tools and extra resources you need for using a resin printer is already a bit much.

I believe you can print multiple objects by loading them into the preview of you printing software. As with FDM printers you still use a slicer to prepare the printing process.

I haven’t really looked into the various resins. I just ordered up two bottles of the cheapest stuff I could find, figured once I learn how to use the thing I can start being picky about the materials I use. :stuck_out_tongue:

I suppose that’s something I need to figure out too, whether or not I have the software I need to set that stuff up or not. Right now, I have a sort of STL viewer on my computer, but I haven’t dabbled further on that front yet. I skimmed the book that came with the unit last night and hope to give it a proper read tonight. Then I’m going to do the little practice run detailed in the book to make sure I have it right.

You tube is your friend. Watch all the vids about your printer that you can, including how to set it up. If you’re on Facebook, there are some really good 3d printing groups that can provide a lot of help. Most of all, have fun.

I don’t do Facebook at all.

That said, I found a beginners guide video for my printer and plan to sit through that as soon as I get a little time to do so.

And I received my NCR Rangers today!

As a fellow non-Facebook user I would definitely recommend YouTube. I’ve been researching printers for a few months and I’ve watched a bunch on the Mars that might be helpful.

Please keep us up to date on your progress!

I don’t have a resin printer but I got an Ender 3 a few months ago ad so far am very happy with it. I wanted to print a few miniatures but am mostly doing terrain and things for the house so I wanted the bigger build surface. To make multiple of the same item is pretty easy. I use Cura as a slicer and you can just click your model and tell it how many to add to the build plate.
Are you talking about the drumlin diner? I just got done printing that and it is a really cool model.

Mins is throwing errors when I try to use it, and I’m still waiting for a message from customer support to see if I can start figuring out how to fix it. So far I haven’t found anything helpful online.

Yeah, the diner is one that I want to do. I also found a model for Swan. There’s a bunch of vehicles that I doubt they’ll ever do an official model for. Tons of small bits that would be fun. I’ve got a LOT of stuff I’d like to do.

So, the 3d printer is up and running for about a day now. Thought I’d show off what I’ve got so far.

The shelves are the official ones. I really like them. In addition to the shelves themselves, I also have the vertical portions sitting off to the side right now. Enough to make five of the tall shelves. I plan to do up a set of the shorter ones too and will likely need to print a few more shelves to make use of it all. My plan is to do a mix of the shelves they supply with items on them, and some random bits of my own on some of the empty shelves to fill things out and make sure everything is visually diverse. NOTE: The shelves with items on them. you have to be careful trimming supports. The missiles of all things were really fragile. I broke one, but it was easy to glue the broken piece back in place.

The pack brahman turned out perfect. I was thinking about printing two, but decided for now to just do one on the off chance Modiphius ever decides to do an official model. If I ever need a second one, I can always print another.

The dead brahman was supposed to include a raven on it that never printed. Otherwise the piece turned out nicely and I have a couple of ideas for how to use it. I’m going to put it on a base and treat it sort of like an objective marker.

The safes are the official ones. I already had some, but have some plans for them so used the empty space on the build plate to print a few extra.

The raider with the base. For some reason the club she was supposed to be holding and her hand never printed. On the up side, I was going to cut the club away and give her a gun anyway, so that won’t be a big deal.

The model with the walking stick is supposed to be a trader, I intend to use him with the pack brahman. His face mask printed a little funny, but I’m still happy with him.

The vault dweller right beside the trader was actually the first print I did. Most of these items I printed as groups, that one I printed alone because I wanted to make sure the machine was working correctly before I did a bunch of stuff at once. She turned out perfectly.

The Bloatfly turned out really good. Unfortunately I was a little rough getting it off and managed to break the bug off of the barrel. It was easy to pin.

The Drumlin diner signs. One turned out good, the other didn’t. The pole and sign print together, and since one didn’t print right, and the other I have specific plans for that doesn’t involve the pole, I canceled the build before the poles could finish. I’m trying to think of anything I could use the warped sign for, the poles should be easy to find a home for.

Did three tool chests. I like them really well, they’re going to look great in any garage or work area.

In addition to what is pictured here:

  • I have a set of vertical pieces for the shelving. They were fresh out of the printer around the time I took the pictures so they didn’t get included.

  • The pack brahman was the second attempt. The first was a failed print by any definition.

  • I’m printing a mortar for the minutemen right now. I found a print file online for it, but there were two problems. 1. It didn’t look like it was going to fit my print area. and 2. It looked a bit big to me. I sized the whole thing down about 20% and I thought it looked much better. I suspect this will be something Modiphius will eventually make an official model for, when that happens I’ll find out how close I am for size.

I’m still sort of learning how to do all this 3d printing stuff. @robhistory is giving me some good advice on how to use the printer, so hopefully I’ll get better at using it with experience and guidance.

Coming up:

  • I want to print off a few Coupe cars, at least a couple.
  • Short shelves.
  • I have my heart set on doing up a proper diner. Problem is that the fine I have is just a LITTLE bigger than my build area even cut into the pieces the designer has it in. As such, I need to figure out how to cut it into more pieces. Odds are I’ll have to print it in four pieces to make everything fit on the printer, then I’ll end up gluing it all together once it’s done
  • I have a lot of models downloaded from Thingiverse that I want to print, but as I put a dent in that list, I’ll likely be wading into some more of the Modiphius stuff. I REALLY want the Vault scatter bundle, so the next time I order miniatures I’ll almost certainly add that to my order. It looks like the Vertibird might be too big for my printer, so I’m struggling with that one. Worst case with the virtibird is that I’ll need to find a way to cut the file so it fits in the printer. The vault files themselves, I’m sort of torn on. Printing enough material to make a full vault would be a massive undertaking when it comes to time, but at the same time I’d like to have at least some of the official product, . . . I’ll think on it a bit and decide some time down the road, maybe after my “Print it” pile shrinks a bit.

Wow, you’ve printed so much already?! o.O

I starting printing on Monday and after some failures I might finish two pieces today - that is if they turn out okay.

Do you tilt your models and do you use supports? I think I need a lot of time, because tilting a model makes the print higher, thus requiring more time. I’m also using a black resin which according to the software and internet needs 15 seconds exposure time, despite the bottle saying 8 seconds. Maybe I’ll tinker a bit and see what happens.

So far 3d printing has been hard, so your work is impressive!

Also I think you can print the vertibird. It comes alread in many smaller pieces for you to print and then you put it together.

You can set things up to print more than one item at a time. For example, all of the shelves I printed in two grounds. I set up a tray with one of each of the cluttered shelves and four empty ones and printed that twice. The diner signs, poles, safes, and the dead brahman were all printed as one group. The rest of the figures and the tool cabinets were all done as one set.

I’m printing pretty much non-stop with the thing. 3-4 hours per build plate, it adds up quick.

Since the picture above, I have a set of tall supports for the shelves, a mortar that turned out smaller than I thought it was going to (Still going to use it this way for now), a group of models (Two centaurs, Takahashi from Diamond City, and a girl wearing an eyebot helmet with bunny ears I found online. And I started a bundle of short shelf supports this morning.

I haven’t tilted anything. I just click the add supports option and let the program add what it thinks is needed. I’ve been told there are better programs for it, but I’ll go looking at my options when I feel a bit more comfortable printing.
