Hey, if the Danube-class Runabouts (all named after Earth’s rivers) gets away with name name U.S.S. Rio Grande, I think it’s fair for other people to use that name in earlier eras.
The one in Signals was for sure a tongue-twister.
Not if you are from Pennsylvania or have family there!
Well, I’m actually closer to the Danube…
For the Campaign I wrote for my players I created a medical research and tactical triage Intrepid called the USS Uijeongbu originally outfitted to get in and out of active Borg encounters to rescue crews of ships in danger
There needs to be an Excelsior-class starship called USS Lee! Someone get this to the writers so we can have it!!!
Why about USS Hedy Lamarr.
A technical test bed, specialized in communication with quantum torpedoes.
Maybe a pinup drawn on the hull
Highly recommend the DC Legends of Tomorrow episode with her
While not a ship, one of the shuttles on the Lexington in our local campaign is the Lamarr (NCC-1709/1).
One of Uranus’ moons, which was named for the character The Tempest. There are actually more Star Trek ships named after satellites in the solar system then people (real or imagined).
Some people suggest USS Uranus but there was too many explicit jokes.
A Swedish history teacher suggested USS Risback, Pavel Andreievich Chekov wanted to command it but at the last minute Starfleet realized it was too political.
Yes, I was just joking about it being named for the man famously denied his rights and whose name became synonymous with police procedure.
As for coming up with new names for ships, there’s always theme-naming by class. (WARNING: Incoming shameless plug imminent!)
The Charger-class destroyer was named after predators and fantastic creatures so USS Sphinx, USS Griffin, USS Chimera, USS Basilisk and the like…
The Wizard-class technical testbed vessel was named after fictional wizards (natch) and fantasy locales like USS Gandalf, USS Sparrowhawk, USS Prydain, USS Earthsea…
The Aerie-class surveyor (aka the Raven from VOY) was named after types of birds or Earth cities depending on whether it was designated a surveyor or colony ship, respectively.
Funny thing about names: there are so many to choose from. The tough part is making sure you don’t pick a silly name for your starship.
Anime names are a possibility.
They had two ships called the Kei & the Yuri mentioned briefly in one episode of TNG, I remember I think they were freighters. Plus, the Yamato got its’ named from Space Battle Cruiser Yamato and not the historical Yamato from what I read but every one thought it was named after the historical ship. (TNG used to have a hidden anime reference in most episodes, on the old Trek and Anime broads when TNG was airing for the first time they had some active discussions trying to spot it in the recently aired episode). Often they would hide something briefly on a display screen as I recall.)
Of course you can also have civilian or pleasure cruise transport starship like in this video in the link, you could use the name of the ship in the video. Surprised no has sated up the ship too…
USS Wesley Crusher a Runabout shuttle aka “Shuttle Wesley”
Dur, me so dumb.
I totally didn’t pick that up.
The USS Lester B. Pearson and the USS Dag Hammarskjöld.
The USS Dag Hammarskjöld sadly crashed during an hostage release mission in Romulian Neutral zone. The prototype of Hammer Shield was lost.
The USS Lester B. Pearson… was an early Earth ship build by Canada for Canadians before Federation before the universal translator was functional. Due to a French and English bi-linguist crew it was not very efficient. One day, in mission with the USS Charles de Gaulle they both disappeared and nobody seems to care about anymore. The last transmission was “Vive le Québec libre”
I can see William D Porter as a Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis movie.
Or as the player’s ship.
Their test of torpedoes launchers, with its complications, was sadly (or maybe not) very similar to the William D Porter.
If it was a Canadian ship it’d not be USS…
that said Lester B Pearson is important to more then just Canada. look up why he has a nobel peace prize
