Star Trek Adventures Online Character Generator

I personally dont think a milestone feature is needed. The output pdf is editable on any system with free software and all youre talking about is increasing a number by one or adding a talent/value.

The time itll take to redo the lifepath process vs the manaul edit is massively imbalanced. Perhaps having something like a milestone helper, with reminder text and the ability to input stats to filter talents by prerequisite would be helpful? But more than that seems like more effort than it is worth imho (especially as there are 2 versions of the milestone system)

First off, kudos for continuing the work on this, it continues to be an impressive tool!

Is it at all practical to have a simple data entry option? You could give returning users an all-in-one guided form to fill in the numbers from an existing sheet - then they can use a milestone button to add their changes before generating the new version.

This could be a half-way house between saving characters and having to recreate the whole creation process. It would also allow for the quick creation of supporting characters and NPCs.

Having said that, being able to save characters would be very useful.

Rather than worry about storing data on the server, you could try and make use of the browser’s own local storage? As long as the user hasn’t cleared their data, the character could still be there (there’s at least one site I know that does something similar).

I personally would be in favour of having the ability to export data to a local file, possibly as a json format file? The majority of the data would be quite brief, as you’d only need names for talents and the like (the text is already in the website). That file could then be reloaded directly into the fields for a new session - although you’ll want to make sure the data entry is fully sanitised!

Awesome development. Really great work and thank you very much.

Under the Child mentoring/advancement rules, it says that Child characters can’t advance an attribute beyond 10 and can’t advance a discipline beyond 3. I’m pretty sure that’s just for the purposes of advancement.

But it’s also true that “Young” characters of other types have an absolute maximum in both attributes and disciplines, so I was hoping to check if there’s an absolute maximum for Child characters.

There is.
Cf. p. 201, left column, the two paragraphs at the bottom. I would quote, yet I don’t want to spread too much of the crunch. People should buy books.

Also take into account the changes to step six of the lifepath creation as noted on p. 200.

Btw., in the post you quoted, you also missed “Child”, as in “4. new Character roles”.

Hm. For me, p. 201, left column, is the Advancement rules I was talking about.

I guess my question was more “are there maximum values that need to be enforced during the character creation process, or do maximums only come up in the context of advancement/mentoring?”

Good catch. Thanks.

Okay, I mistook it for a maximum sum. Sorry for that.

For individual attributes’ maxima, check out the “Childhood Insights” talent (p. 200) that is mandatory for Children characters to take in step five: career.

Ah! Well spotted! I copied that text over without fully reading it. Thanks for that!

I really like this tool but the “Export to PDF” seems to be broken (Chrome 99) and the “Feedback” button does not work (the Google Document has been deleted). Is there any way to export the result another way?

I suspect that you’re using the old version of the character generator. (the one at the modiphiusapps URL). Try the new one and see if it works any better for you.

The Mission Pod option for the Luna class starship is missing in the latest version (as of March 2022) of the online character/starship generator. It existed in the previous versions. The Command Division Sourcebook says that, “the Luna class has a modular equipment pod much like the Nebula class”

There was a conversation about this topic farther up-thread (around Sep 21). Some folks argued that despite that mention in the Sourcebook, it seemed like the spaceframe was overpowered if it was also intended to have a mission pod.

E.g.:

When I was doing recent revisions to the Starship page, I was ultimately persuaded that the Luna’s stats (and Talent count) seemed wrong if you’re ultimately expected to add a mission pod as well, so I removed the Mission Pod for the Luna. There’s a note in the release notes (“News”) for the v1.220115 version that references that change.

Since there’s a bunch of disagreement about this class, I could provide a ticky-box to allow for some override.

Thanks for responding to my post bcholmes. Much appreciated! The Luna class is probably one of my favorite ship classes. Based on what was seen in Lower Decks and Picard Season 2 Ep.1, I think the Luna class is more of a multi-role Exploration Cruiser versus a mainly science vessel as described in the game. My home brew version of the Luna is, -1 to sensors for systems, change departments to +1 Science and +1 Conn (since the Luna is an explorer). The remaining systems +1 would be for the mission pod. Keep the advanced sensors and Advanced laboratories talents but the EMH talent would become a trait if you consider it standard on Starfleet ships constructed after 2380 so another talent could be chosen in its place. Along with the two talents for the Pod. Not sure if this may seem overpowered for some.

The fluff in the command book indicates that because the ship is so new, there aren’t actually different types of pods created for it yet (“The only pod so far in development…”), and it also sort of implies that at least the default Advanced Sensor Suites talent may be part of the pod.

I do have a general question about other items to include: There are starbase talents in the command book, it might be useful to include them in the big list? And what about stuff from the tribble playable character sheet available as a free pdf?

Go ahead and add them to the issue list (as you’ve done with other items you’ve found: thanks for that, by the way!). I’ll look in to them.

Am I reading right that Child characters don’t get a Talent on the Education step? So they end up with only 3 talents, one of which is the Childhood Insights talent?

The advancement rules talk about them picking up a fourth value (and then being equivalent to a normal adult), but I don’t see where the fourth talent comes in to play.

BC

I got confused a bit as well so breaking it down and assuming I also understand it…
You get the Species Talent
Upbringing Talent
Choosing Pre-Adolescent/Adolescent and take Childhood Insights (3rd one woo)
Then when they reach max upgrades as an Adolescent and get another advancement they change Childhood Insights to Untapped Potential

Then you theoretically go to Starfleet academy and pick your major/minor and get that talent if I’m understanding right.

So… yeah kids 3 talents unless they go to the Academy?

I guess that makes sense. Or Training for, say, Civilian characters.

Thanks,
BC

I’ve been rolling this idea around in my head for a while. I prototyped a feature that basically “stores” all of the data about a character or starship in the URL. What that gives me is the ability to create a bookmarkable URL that contains my character/starship data <there had been a link here, but it no longer works because everything changes>.

(This is very preliminary work, and will be fleshed out a bit more in the future).

But once I can “remember” a character in some way, I can do more things with it. At the moment, I’m just giving myself the ability to re-create the PDF. But in the future, I could add in the ability to apply character advancement, or whatnot.

(The ship in that URL is the USS Alan Turing, the fine Intrepid-class ship that my character captains in one of the STA campaigns that I’m in).

Anyway, just noodlin’.
