gflash85, if you need Mission Pods for your homeruled Luna class, take a gander at this. It’s an expanded write-up of Mark Compton’s article at Continuing Mission on the Nebula’s mission pods. It has 10 different mission pods instead of the 6 in Mark’s article.
I am having an issue with the character generator and I’m hoping someone can help me out. The issue started about a week ago. Now any time I try to export to PDF I get a message saying it is being sent through an unsecure connection;
"The information you have entered on this page will be sent over an insecure connection and could be read by a third party.
Are you sure you want to send this information?"
I tell it to export anyway and Firefox blocks it saying, “File not downloaded: Potential security risk.”
I can tell Firefox to download it anyway, but when it does I get a 72 byte PDF that both Acrobat Reader and Firefox are unable to open. Acrobat says, “because it is either an unsupported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn’t correctly decoded).” Firefox doesn’t give me a message, it just opens a blank page.
This happens on both versions of the character generator; the one hosted by Modiphius and the the hosted by bcholmes.
You say it happens on the new (bcholmes.org) version. Is it the same message?
Are you sure the URL starts with https ?
Usually, that message suggests that you’re trying to fetch a resource using a non-secure protocol (using “http” instead of “https” is the most common problem).
Another possibility is that you’ve got some malware on your machine, sadly. Or some kind of proxy (are you using a work machine?)
I use Firefox pretty regularly (on a Mac) and haven’t seen that issue.
I’m using my personal machine (I’m using a PC). I was able to export a starship sheet about a week ago. This has happened since. I did run malware and antivirus checks before posting, and both came up with nothing.
Though I am unsure if this will be helpful, I have found a similar problem on one of my domains in the past few days. When trying to open certain resources on the site, I would get either only part of the information or none at all. The problem, as @bcholmes pointed out, was due to a conflict between protocols (http and https). In my case, the site was being called using the secure protocol but the relative link to the resource was unsecure. Though not complicated or lengthy in my case, I did have to go through and change those pesky URLs. I also updated all the redirects on my site to ensure that any “arrivals” to the site are forced to use the secure URL.
I mention this because maybe there is something similar going on in the coding of the page that is beyond the scope of @littlediegito to affect.
I’ve done a quick look-through of the code, and am pretty sure that all my code references are to the correct https. I also tested the PDF generation, and it seems to be behaving correctly. Lastly, I’ve checked my server logs, and I see that a number of people are getting the PDFs correctly. So whatever the problem is, I feel like it’s something specific to your machine. I can’t speak for the modiphiusapps site, which, at last report, was having PDF problems. But the new site appears to be working.
Some things you might want to try:
Can you try the app using a different browser? Chrome or Safari or something?
Do you get a different result if you open a private window?
It was seeming like it was my machine as I was able to export a PDF on my tablet. I tried on Edge on my machine and got the same result as on Firefox. However, when I tried on Firefox in a private window I was able to export the PDF just fine.
I don’t know how hard this would be, but what if the player could upload the pdf and then the generator could “read” it? This could be done by either reading the fields themself, or via a QR code that could be placed at a bottom corner of the sheet. The latter would be similar to the magic URL idea.
That is considerably harder than magic URLs. It also raises the complexity by a considerable amount as any user upload has to be sanitised to minimize profile for exploits/malicious attacks. Sanitising uploads is far, far more complex than sanitizing a “simple” string.
Funny Story.
A few days ago I asked one of my players for a Easter oneshot to built a starship. He used the Charakter-Generator. He asked me about the Mission Profile, which would fitting the Adventure and I answered “I don’t know I have not decided which we will play.”
Than I begann reading an Adventure “Plague of Arias” from These are the Voyages.
And surprise, surprise I had to modifi his ship as there is a eight Mission Profile for Star Ships!
Huh. Good catch! Although, annoyingly, it looks like that profile doesn’t have a name. (And part of me wonders, given how adventure-specific it is, if it should be included in the generator).
I’ve been laying the groundwork to introduce that adventure to my players. (One character’s backstory included “serving on a medical ship” and “having served with the CMO before”: in a session, I dropped that they’d served with the Starfleet-famous Dr. Tara Jenner).
Yeah, Continuing Mission has it in their list of Mission Profiles near the bottom of their Spaceframes Index list; they refer to it as the “Expanded Sensor Footprint” Mission Profile.
Oddly enough, “Expanded Sensor Footprint, Prototype” is just a list of the 2 relevant traits for this Mission Profile.
I’m wondering if this Mission Profile should have just been listed as “Project Escalante” instead, since the expanded sensor footprint is incidental to the actual purpose of the mission profile, which is to increase civilian transparency of typical Starfleet operations on a starship.
It was a very fun mission to play, I turned it in a Big Brother mission, alpha beta quadrant range instant transmission, increasing the threat of Arias virus to Federation level, with cams on head officers (except medical officers and ship counselors and cameras everywhere except sickbay and toilets)
They have work hard to get rid of the Expanded Sensor Footprint, the cams and most of the stuff (since Romulians and BBG have bought a full time subscription) and convince Admirals that letting PR modifying starships involved in classified missions was a very bad idea (but thé PR didn’t know about classified missions)
As a reward they kept the talent, retrieve their mission profile but get rid of cams, instant quadrant transmission and other traits (except prototype)
Hey sorry to bother you, I noticed Cadets do not appear to be implemented just yet and as I was going through to double check (make sure I didn’t miss it or anything), I realized that there’s a couple different ways to add them in if you haven’t gotten to that point yet.
The first would be Starfleet Cadet being added to “what kind of character are you making?” drop down list.
This of course does kinda suggest that there is a lot more coding to do for the system to have the alternate path set up.
The second option would be to add them to the “Select your experience” section with a Cadet choice there that makes it so you only have to put that in along with the choice of Junior or Senior cadet after affecting the Career Events section.
Last one would probably be easiest? Adding a button to the career events that lets you skip it and adds a flag for being a Cadet.
Juniors being auto-selected when they skip Career event 1 and jump straight to the finishing touches +2 attributes +2 disciplines and last value etc
Seniors being auto-selected when they skip Career event 2 and jump straight to the finishing touches etc
