Captain's Log Solo Roleplaying Game

Should be noted that A4 in Europe is different to A4 in the US. Our A5 isn’t quite the same size as half the size of an A4 in America.

Why isn’t there a name for it, then? :see_no_evil:

That being said, since the (“Digest”-sized) book already contains sheets, maybe taking these out and tweak them to A5 could be a workaround. Maybe I should even try to tweak the (form-fillable!) letter-sized sheets to be printed to A5.

But, to quote Cato the Elder: Moreover, I advise that character sheets shall be supplied in A4 instead of or additional to Letter.

I have a printer that can scale printing up or down to different sizes. Maybe you have or can get a printer to do that too.

Hi

quick question before I buy one of the PDF version of the game (just waiting what cover I’ll buy  ) is it compatible with STA modules/campaigns ?

Will it be dedicated solo scenaries/campaigns ?

Depends on what you define as “compatible”. System is streamlined, e.g. there are no Challenge Dice in Captain’s Log and you will only need 2d20, not up-to-5d20. This means that Tasks and Task Difficulty and Combat works slightly different from STA games.
Yet, characters and ships can be converted with ease (there’s a section on how to do so in Captain’s Log) and you can use your STA characters in Captain’s Log with no further work.
I didn’t try (yet?) but converting STA missions/campaigns to CL should definetly be possible and not too much of work, actually. You should be able to use CL’s mission generation style for STA without too much work.

Captain’s Log contains several metric tons of random tables. These are great and can be used immediately for STA without any conversion or further ado. Especially if you’re a GM, it’s totally worth it just because of all the sweet, sweet randomness.

There’s already a digital supplement with several “Mission Prompts”, CL’s equivalent of STA’s Mission Briefs (one-page mission outlines). Thus, I, personally, expect more of them to drop in the future, but that’s a question, only @Modiphius-Jim can answer.

thanks for your reply

What I define as “compatible” is to play STA scenaries/campaigns in Captain’s log system

You should have minimal difficulty using any sta product with cl. All the missions and mission briefs can be used as missions for your character. It’d be like a lot of the random rolls were done for you.

I’ll make a video soon about this topic.

I’m a bit confused on how to use the table on p. 299. Yes, it is (at least) two tables in one, the first table being the four left columns, the second being the two remaining right columns. The modifieres of the second table seem to affect the first table. Yet: There’s a technological development column and a table on types of societies (p. 300). There’s a governance column and a table on types of governments (p 300). So, essentially it seems like the only unique thing about the table is the planetary population. Why are there the other two columns on technological development and governance? Unplanned redundancy? Shortcut? Or should I actually roll “twice” and come up with a planetary population of Millions, a technological development level of hunter/gatherer, a simple governance structure (table on p. 299), being an oligarchy (table on p. 300; okay that actually makes sense), following a polytheistic religion (table on p. 300) and being a post-industrial (table on p. 300) society?!

Any ideas?

More tools in the toolbox. Use them all, some of them, or none of them, either in combination or separately.

New video for y’all, this one providing some advice on playing non-Starfleet species and ships in Captain’s Log. #llap

Hi there, I’m new to STA (and RPGs in general). I’m really liking the Captain’s Log book so far!
I just had a couple of questions.
First of all, regarding the PDF - is there a specific reader that should be used? On iOS/Mac Preview and Books apps, clicking on any of the page links just seem to jump back to the front cover. Same seems to happen on my Kindle, too.
Also, I would love an immersive tool to write/play this game in. Would the Fantasy Grounds STA DLC work in that regard, or do you have any plans to release a companion app or something similar?

Adobe Acrobat or Reader should work. I’m not familiar with the pdf readers you mentioned. My Kindle is notoriously terrible at displaying PDFs.

No plans for an app. You could certainly use FG’s existing STA set; you’d have to ignore some of the rules since CL is a streamlined version of the STA ruleset.

Thanks for the info! Preview and Books are just built in readers on Mac/iOS. I tried Adobe on iOS and have the same issue - from the contents page, the link to the introduction works, but all the others just bounce back to the cover. However, further into the book the links I try do seem to be working, so perhaps it’s just an issue with the contents?

I figured the FG STA set would likely be overkill - all I really want is an LCARS notes app, but that doesn’t seem to be a thing outside of Android. Oh well  Is there any likelihood of the CL ruleset being added to FG, either part of STA or separately?

I just got Captains log . Where can I find this supplement? It might be useful to help get me started

It was at some point included in my digital download (as a separate PDF, 19 pages with 10 Mission Prompts and 5 classes of Lower Decks starships). I bought a hardcopy of CL directly at Modiphius.net – don’t know whether this also applies to other shops and/or PDF-only. But I would(!) suppose(!) that it would be included in all sales or made available for a small price, soon.

Addendum: The introduction says:

To me that sounds like it would be included in every download. But in the end, only Modiphius can tell.

OK, I bought my copy from my FLGS but sent a Email requesting a PDF copy. Hopefully if do get the digital copy I’ll also get the extra stuff as well.

The supplemental info is part of the download package. If you bought the print book, email support@modiphius.com with proof of purchase or a picture of you holding the book and they’ll send you the pdf material.

I sent the Email on Thursday, the same day I bought the book. Hopefully I’ll get the digital package on Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Update: I received the digital download package today

Just got my copy, and I’m absolutely loving it on multiple levels – not only am I excited to play a solo game, but as I hoped, the book will be an absolute bounty of brainstorming for my regular live campaign game.

I was also very excited to see some 32nd Century Ships, but, to be “that guy” for a moment, does anyone know how/why they got the low stats that they did? I know we don’t know too much in canon, but at a bare minimum, several of these ships seemed MASSIVE. Eaglemoss’s Shipyards book (which is not full canon I know), has the Angelou Class at 2km – that’s 2/3 the length of a Borg Cube – but it’s a Scale 5, and the Galaxy Class (650-ish meters if memory serves) is a Scale 6. Shipyard’s also lists the Kirk-class at like 1.3km, and they do say on the show that it can crew 2000 people, but other than the IMT-C, it’s stats are actually worse than the TOS Constitution Class and they’re both a Scale 4.

Not long after Season 3 of Discovery, I was actually noodling on a 32nd Century campaign that would take place on a Kirk-Class ship, and using the Eaglemoss stats, the saucer section alone was nearly DS9-sized (Scale 12), and my vision was to actually have a kind of mobile space station campaign, with various traders and diplomats and such coming and going as the ship arrived at various locations to help rebuild the Federation. (Never got it off the ground, but maybe after Season 5, I’ll dust it off again.)

Anyway, it’s my game, I can use whatever stats I want, it’s all good. But I was just curious what the thinking was behind it. Are these stats possibly in relation to other ships of the era because otherwise they would be too inflated for practical play? Am I dead wrong and in fact they’re all small and kinda crappy compared to the golden age of exploration ships of the 23rd century?
