Physical Determination tokens would be nice.
I use the IDIC emblem online, but printing it out is not a patch on the old plastic Momentum and Threat counters.

Almost sure that this will not happen (again). Back when the game hit the market, you were able to buy single d20 in the three department colours. The ones by Q Workshop (at least the CD were produced by Q Workshop, I think). Modiphius stopped selling single dice since then, claiming the logistics behind it being too much overhead to be profitable. Fair point actually.
So, I’m afraid, it’s now 5d20 with trek emblems. I hope we get at least one new colour, though. Always wanted something neutral for DMing (yes, tunic or klingon dice do work ).
I was talking about the Determination markers (and Momentum etc). Having to buy a Starter Set ti get them is about unfair. I can see why they stopped doing individual d20s - I’m very surprised they even did them, they must have cost a bomb. That said, it would have been nice to buy the different dice according to kind. Getting enough CDs was expensive while having to pay for d20s that we have an over abundance of.
I have to agree with Astronaut on some of these points. Without CDs, it looks like an unarmed strike will always do 2 damage whether you’re a petite science officer or a muscular Klingon warrior. With only the QS to go by, I suppose it’s possible that some Characters will do more damage, but the fact that it’s not tied to fitness or security makes the mechanic too unrealistic, IMHO. I would at least like to see unarmed strike severity vary from, say, 1-4 depending on other characteristics (e.g., the range of your Fitness + Security determines its severity in some way). Also, I can imagine circumstances where a Character could attempt to be deadly with their unarmed strike, but the new rules require it to be a stun-only attack.
Bad news, again: I think they sold acrylic Momentum & Threat markers (but never Determination) at some point, but stopped. Or they limited these for the Borg Cube Collector’s Edition in the first place and never sold them individually. Actually don’t remember.
But: Yes. That would indeed be great!
Yes, they did sell them separately for a short time. When they found they had only a few remaining, I made sure to buy one set. Now all you can get are the ones you print at home yourself or the cardboard versions that come with certain playsets. Maybe Modiphius would release 3D-printable designs for people to use(???). They wouldn’t look quite the same but could be good enough, especially if one switched out the media used for red and blue for the two types.
Someone’s done the STLs and they’re available for free. It’s just the acrylic are much nicer.
So the core book is available for pre-order, but the PDF itself is not available with the pre-order. I got a place holder imager when I downloaded it from the link, will anyone who pre-ordered this receive an email update when the PDF is available?
Do we know when the pdf will be available for the preorder?
Almost certainly yes (as in: 99.999% sure and the remaining 0.001 are for the occasional volcanic eruption directly below the data storage facility where the service is hosted). When any file/folder linked to a digital purchase with Modiphius was updated or any file was added to it, emails were sent. So it’s safe to assume this will be no different with the 2e PDF.
Alongsinde GenCon, at the latest (hopefully, see disclaimer regarding volcanic eruptions, above). That’s all I know.
From today’s email newsletter (UK-flavoured), on the first-edition books on sale:
So. Broadly compatible, it is? snickers
Anyway, link leads to another blog post titled “First Edition Compatibility”. It says in its first paragraph:
Uh-huh.
Well, I’ll spare you my spite for the marketing liesalternative uses of the meanings of words and want to highlight something I like about 2e: Extended Consequences are part of the Core Rules, now. YES! I hoped for that to happen! Extended Consequences were one of the major improvements that came with the GM Guide.
Still not hyped about the rest, sadly.
Now that they’ve shed a bit more light on how the combat system works, and I’m a bit more confident on being able to reinsert the old combat system back in, I’m a bit more excited about 2e. We even discussed possibly preordering it. I’m not as excited as I would have been had they not tried to keep us on tenterhooks, but I’m happier than I was two weeks ago.
And yeah, I’m a bit put out by the spin. Mostly because I’d hoped that I wouldn’t have to deal with it here more than the spin itself.
Having studied the quickstart, read the blog posts and watched the AMA, I’m thinking most of the changes they’re making are in the right direction. For personal combat at least, I think the updated version will actually work better narratively, although I have issues with glass-jaw minor NPCs. I’m reserving judgment on the ship combat until I’ve seen how that works (I find the 1e system very busy and overbalanced in favour of the players). I also want to see how the revised extended tasks will work.
That said, I will miss the challenge dice (though I’m thinking I can use mine for Cohors Cthulhu), and I really don’t want to buy even more books to get the updated talents and species abilities!
I think I can see the reasoning for calling this “compatible” with 1e. Most of the stat blocks are unchanged, except for simple elements (stress tracks for example); it’s the details of the talents that are changing. On-the-fly conversion won’t be too difficult if you don’t have talent details printed on the character sheets, as you’re simply looking them up somewhere else. It’s approximately on a parr with the likes of Savage Worlds or the World of Darkness updates, rather than D&D style complete rewrites.
Exactly. Broadly compatible feels appropriate.
I’m excited that the changes will help some scenes go by faster, combat especially. I really don’t mind the removal of Challenge Dice. For one I can still use the ones I got for STA for Fallout.
I also really like how NPCs are simpler than PCs in combat, as a GM I’ve always liked things like “minions” and I’ve never been big on PC/NPC design symmetry.
Ultimately excited about everything I’ve seen, but remaining cautious about how it’ll all come together.
Not sure what I think about the “NPC-individual Threat” mechanics. Sounds like lots of bookkeeping and paperwork.
Anyone here who already had the opportunity to play(test) the quickstart and has some experience with it?
Or maybe even @Modiphius-Nathan or @Modiphius-Jim can highlight what I’m missing?
It seems to me that Personal Threat replaces Stress for certain NPCs. Or to put it another way: NPCs can spend Stress to generate Threat. So it’s actually the same amount of bookkeeping, just with more options (if that is indeed how Personal Threat works).
What does the 2e mean for the character packs and the PDF only supplements like Year Five and the Animated series, will they be updated for this edition?
Also when will the PDF for the core rule book be ready for download?
I doubt it. It’s a cool idea and would be awesome, but the problem is threefold: First is that it would be a ton of effort due to the sheer number of lifepath options at the moment and to give it away for free would be…less than profitable. Second is more minor, but how would they target us? Like, I have many of the books, but I don’t have, say, Discovery, do I get Kelpians too? It would be even more effort to actually update the individual PDFs…and they’ve given some conversion instructions, which suggests that the old books are being left alone. Third and most importantly, virtually all of the species that people would be excited by and would want to buy have already be done. By updating all the existing ones and offering them for free…that would make 2e books significantly less attractive. I reckon they’ll want to resell them to us (hopefully with substantial enough changes so that they don’t feel like they’re just reselling the same stuff to us). I really like the idea, but I’m skeptical for those three reasons.
I don’t believe they’ve said. They’ve said that they’re hoping to have physical copies at GenCon (August?), so presumably before that. Judging by FL’s timescale (might not be justified), then it could be anytime between now and July, depending on how rushed their timetable is.
I recall mention of update supplements to the 1E books, but it was never specified if it was paid or not. I think it was short little guides that were talked about, not full books or anything like that. Of course, a lot of things don’t need to be updated, since they’re purely narrative.
Wonder if the second edition will have new rules for experience (take Dune as an example) because it is really needed.
