Star Trek Adventures Rules Digest

Are there Klingon specific rules on starship combat?

Unfortuantely, the original GM screen does not have page references on it. The Klingon GM screen does (referring to the Klingon core).

I’ve been looking everywhere for info on the Rules Digest version and I admit I’m at a loss. So, if I get it right, the rules (combat, character creation, etc) are the same as the core books… But the setting info (races, ships, equipment) from TNG and up aren’t there. Is that it? Thanks.

Basically: Yes.

There are slight changes/updates to the rule, in comparison with the core rules. Some random tables were altered, character advancement adapted to the model introduced in the Klingon core rules.

But in principle, it’s a core rulebook focussed on the TOS era.

The description on the website might help.

I’m just starting a TOS era campaign using the Rules Digest, and I’ve noticed something about the Helmsman Role that seems odd. It seems to be a copy/paste of the Ops Manager position from the Core Rulebook, with the role name changed, and specifies that it’s Engineering Department only. This both contradicts the TOS series, where Sulu wears Command gold, not Operations red, it also doesn’t seem to make much sense that the Helmsman’s special ability isn’t anything to do with piloting the ship. The special ability listed is the same as for Ops Manager, i.e. it’s identical to the ability for Science Officer. This made sense in the Core Rulebook, as the Science Officer role is largely replaced by the Ops Manager by the TNG era, so most ships won’t have both, but in the TOS era having the same ability for Helmsman and Science it means two of the most common choices players will make for their Role are fuctionally duplicates of each other. Is this intentional? I can’t find an official errata covering this, or indeed anything in the Rules Digest.

Indeed a bit odd. You could think of house-ruling the Helm getting Bonus-Momentum when they’re assisted by the ship’s Engines systems, not the ship’s Computers or Sensors.

I’m tempted to take the Helm Officer ability from the Klingon book and give it to the Helmsman - if they succeed at a Conn task to control a starship, they get a Bonus Momentum to use on that task, which can’t be saved.

Do it!
