Random Ship names List

Since there is a Excelsior-Class named USS Berlin, I kept with the idea and named the first ship for my crew USS Hamburg.
The starting crew even had two German crew members.
For Scientists, there would be some German doctors to choose from. Like Robert Koch or Albert Schweizer.
As well as Schiller and Goethe which should not be left out. Naming ships in Trek tends to come simple (at least for me).

Jaja, bin ja schon ruhig. Deutsche Namen klingen halt komisch für mich in dem Kontext…

Well, even Starfleet makes mistakes. Like @LucasCunningham I would have never thought of doing this, for the same reasons. Especially, since recent historic debates put von Braun closer to the Nazi ideology than he was thought to be for long time…

We discussed this in the other thread I mentioned: Naming warships after poets seems rather odd to me. But for civilian ships – why not?

It’s your universe, name ships what you like. I have a Nova class science ship in my game called the USS Arthur Jeffries. (Professor Proton from Big Bang Theory)

John Paul Jones would be a possible addition to the Russian list, as he was hired as an Admiral in the Russian Navy after the American Revolution.

It was a matter of access to the sea - Prussian ports? LOL

@Erosthenes

Actually, yes, there were Prussian ports. Wilhelmshaven for example is still used by the German Navy and hosts the staff of the Einsatzflottille 2, including lots of sub-units of the EF 2. This brigade-level unit encompasses all German Navy Frigates, i.e. the biggest warships the German Navy has. Considering the Baltic Sea, I would name Danzig (now Polish: Gdańsk) as the biggest Prussian port.

I like the idea of cross-hirings. There were some ‘German’ (i.e. Prussian) generals/officers that joined Union Forces befor/in/after the American Civil War. Maybe that could be cool for a ‘German contribution’ to a list especially for the Americans among us.

This was a list of names I threw together when we were trying to work out a name for our ship (which by this stage we knew would be an Akira). There are a fair few in-jokes/references, which are explained afterwards

  • USS Anthem
  • USS Babylon
  • USS Bennelong
  • USS Bright Eyes
  • USS Burden of Sacrifice
  • USS Consensus
  • USS Crying Tiger
  • USS Gallipoli
  • USS Humbling River
  • USS Journey of the Sorcerer
  • USS Kakadu
  • USS Kung Pow
  • USS Narayan
  • USS Ocean’s Edge
  • USS Rising Sun
  • USS Skywalker
  • USS Starlight
  • USS Trip
  • USS Wallumedegal
  • USS Wandering Star

The entirety of USS Anthem is a pun (a phonetic variation on Us And Them).

Crying Tiger is a Thai food/myth callout, because we were that kind of not entirely serious group. Similarly while Kung Pow references the film rather than the dish Kung Pao, they both come down to a translation of “Palace Guardian” and the idea of Federation ships being named after something outside Western human culture

For context, we’re an Australian group so there are some touchstones here specifically for us. The Wallumedegal are the traditional owners of where we played our campaign , and Bennelong was one of the better known of that tribe. Kakadu, however, probably has greater recognition as somewhere Starfleet might name a ship after. Similarly, Australians would totally name a Federation warship Gallipoli as a reminder of why they shouldn’t fight if possible. Rising Sun is a reference to both the badge of our armed forces but also the Japanese rising sun flag (appropriate for the Akira class). Trip is a reference to explorer Matthew Flinder’s cat (any similarity to a certain member of the NX-01 crew is completely accidental).

Bright Eyes was the name the chimp scientists gave human astronaut Taylor in Planet of the Apes, as well as the song about the coming of death in Watership Down, as I was scrolling through my media player for suggestions and choosing those titles that would probably translates well into other (federation) languages such that all of them will get the ship’s name without having to bone up on Earth culture.

A good example actually comes from the sequels to The Matrix, where although one of the hovercraft is named Mjolnir, everyone just calls it the Hammer.

A few ship names that have popped up in games I was involved in, either for character histories, “hero” ships, random encounters, or even just ideas that haven’t been played yet:

TOS/TMP era:
USS Fitzgerald (Ptolemy class transport, characters’ current ship)
USS St. Clair (Ptolemy, wrecked, subject of crew rescue mission)
USS Clemson (Ptolemy, mentioned in intel report)

  • our campaign has dealt with transports a lot, one player referred to it as U-Haul Trek but there’s a point, and these are all sorta named for Great Lakes freighters*

USS Integrity (Constitution)
USS Arktos (Centaur)
USS Parche (Hermes)
USS Edmonton (Miranda)
USS Portland (Miranda)
USS Trafalgar (Excelsior)

TNG era:
USS Hannover (Miranda)
USS Vicksburg (Centaur, then replaced by New Orleans)
USS Solstice (Nova)
USS Kenosha (Ambassador)
USS Lawrence (Niagra)
USS Brisbane (Nebula)
USS Athabaskan (Challenger)

Name for Nova Class: USS Twilight. We named her that for two reasons: one, Twilight is a position of the Sun, like Equinox. Two: our DM at the time knew we’d eventually be carrying a Cloaking Device, so it made sense to name her Twilight.

It’s a great idea to use a random name chart to generate ship names for your gaming sessions, especially if you want to avoid potential controversies or distractions at the table. Let’s roll the dice and see what name we come up with for an American ship:

Rolling a d6 to select the name chart… (Result: 3)
Now, rolling 1d20 to get the name… (Result: 14)

The name for your American ship is “USS Independence.” It’s a classic and patriotic choice for an American vessel in your game. Try this ship name generator. Good luck with your gaming adventures!

I don’t get the reason they get released. It’s not like it is even shilling for something. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

On another website, the bots make topics that seem appropriate, then a day later change it to spam. A way around the moderators I think. Not sure that’s what’s happening here though.

A friend I showed the previous one to said it could be testing of some sort.

Although using an AI/machine learning tool to try to generate ship names might be something that works… unless it pulls from existing tables. Could be useful to try to quickly generate tables from Memory Alpha names, maybe.
