Creating small settlements on Arrakis

Hello everyone,
I created three random tables to create cornerstones for settlement on Arrakis. Hope it might be an inspiration to you!

Allegiance

Faction affiliation is extremely important in the Imperium, and depending on who owns a settlement, agents of a House should be even more careful than usual.

D20Who owns the settlement?
1-2House Corrino as an imperial possession.
3-5The ruling house on Arrakis.
6-7The house that formerly ruled Arrakis.
8-10A house loyal to the current rulers.
11-12A house loyal to the previous rulers.
13-14A house that is allied with that of the party.
15-16A house that is an enemy of the party.
17-18Smugglers.
19Fremen who have partially abandoned traditional life.
20One of the most powerful organizations in the universe (Bene Gesserit, Spacing Guild, CHOAM).

Purpose

Establishing and/or running a settlement away from the large cities of Arrakeen and Carthag needs a good reason, because the Arrakis desert is unforgiving.

D20What is the settlement's purpose?
1-4As a launch site for Carryalls.
5-8As temporary storage for Spice Melange.
9-10As water storage for other bases and Spice harvesters
11-12As a research station.
13-17As a military base against enemy attacks. (D20 - Even: Sufficiently manned; Odd: Understaffed)
18As a prison.
19As a refuge and fortress for an important personage.
20As a monastery and/or pilgrimage site.

Infiltrated!

In the Imperium, nobody with even a little influence remains untouched by spies, saboteurs and other agents of opposing powers.

D20Who placed the agent?
1-3Up to now, no one or all attempts have failed.
4-7A House with which this one has a feud.
7-10The current rulers of Arrakis.
11-12The former rulers of Arrakis.
13-14A House that has shown itself to be unsuspicious of this faction.
15-16The Fremen.
17The Bene Tleilax.
18House Corrino. (D20 - Even: Sardaukar; Odd: different kind of agent)
19The Bene Gesserit.
20Multiple factions: Roll the dice twice more and ignore results 1-3 and 20.

Some time ago I reverse engineered the settlement names from “DUNE: Spice Wars“ to create a generator for random names. I also listed many places from the books to create some sort of database.
I’ll rework the .ODS file to make it user friendly, if anyone is interested.

Being inspired by @JohnDoe , I would like to add two entries for the table Purpose:

  • Production of (roll on Production table)
  • Trading post for (roll on Production table)

Production

Even in a universe of thousand worlds with an economic domain for even the smallest house, some things are produced locally.

  1. „Authentic Fremen“ weavings
„Used as wall drapings, sitting cushions or carpets, your friends will envy you for this souvenir for sure.“

  2. cheap Stillsuits
„Tourists won’t notice the difference, spice crews can’t afford the real stuff. Also, if you know where to buy Fremen ‘suits, you might be suspected of knowing too much.“

  3. Filters
    „This damned sand gets everywhere.“

  4. Lubricants
„Even with the best filters, the machines need nanopowder and hydraulic oils to work. “

  5. Scrap metal
„Sometimes maintenance won’t keep a thing from falling apart and even after you dismantle everything useful, there will be someone who wants to salvage the remains.“

  6. Ores
„Arrakis has strong volcanic activity – and giant worms attracted by rhythmic noises. So whoever is bold or desparate enough to dig holes into the rock may find rich ore veins – or death, as elsewhere on this planet.“

  7. Proteins
„Fungi and Locusts grow and support basic supplicants to those who live in sparse environments. If you can provide enough organic material to feed them.“

  8. Spices
„The plural, things to make your food taste better, you moron. Peppers, cumin and cardamom can be grown almost anywhere.“

  9. Spice beer
„Fermented melange residue, brutally bitter hops, malts so heavy you almost need a spoon – a favorite among harvester crews, their lifeblood some even say.“

  10. Prostitutes
„Being pretty, easily bored or sold by your family – whatever brought you here, only the best will advance to the brothels of Arrakeen or even Carthag. But be aware of your competitors – and of the possibility that misery grows with the place you’re in.“

Feel free to incorporate and expand it to your liking.
